What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Ever notice that your teeth appear a little bit brighter in a photo of yourself taken just a few years ago?

We definitely do.

Teeth discolouration is typically attributed to coffee, red wine, and other things, but there are several more possibilities.

Common Reasons For Tooth Discoloration

  • Spotty Dental Routine
At Seablue Dental of Kent, we are undeniably a little prejudiced. However, if you don’t consistently brush and floss, plaque can turn into tartar and leave a yellow-brown stain along your gumline.
  • Diet
Even some of the foods we love the most, like coffee on a Monday morning or an apple on a cool, crisp day, can leave stains on our teeth. In addition to tea, berries, grapes, tomato and soy sauces, soda, dark juices, and white wine, some of the worst offenders are coffee and red wine.
  • Tobacco Use
The least concerning of the many health problems that smoking and chewing tobacco can bring on is yellow teeth. Nevertheless, among cigarette smokers, it’s one of the most prevalent aesthetic concerns.
  • Too Much Fluoride
Fluoride is beneficial, but like other beneficial things, too much of it isn’t advisable. If you consume too much of it, such as through tap water or dental care products (like mouthwash), your teeth may develop brown outlines or streaks.
  • Enamel Decay
The tough covering that shields the interior of your tooth is called enamel. However, if it degenerates or isn’t fully formed, you might see a number of stains and modifications, such as pits, white patches, or yellow-brown streaks. Make a consultation appointment with us as soon as you suspect deterioration.

What Helps Prevent Stains

Please excuse us if we sound repetitive, but generally speaking, taking excellent care of your teeth and your health is the only surefire approach to prevent teeth discolouration. Here are some of our favorite quick fixes for maintaining your teeth’s radiance:

  • Brush after eating or drinking
  • Floss daily
  • Pass on the sugary foods and drinks
  • Add calcium to your diet
  • Nix any tobacco use
